JKR on Today Show

Hey guys...

The wizarding naturalist
Luna Lovegood, the eccentric Ravenclaw who was fascinated with Crumple-Horned Snorkacks and Umgubular Slashkilters, continues to march to the beat of her own drum.

“I think that Luna is now traveling the world looking for various mad creatures,” Rowling said. “She’s a naturalist, whatever the wizarding equivalent of that is.”

Luna comes to see the truth about her father, eventually acknowledging there are some creatures that don’t exist.

“But I do think that she’s so open-minded and just an incredible person that she probably would be uncovering things that no one’s ever seen before,” Rowling said.

Luna and Neville Longbottom?
It’s possible Luna has also found love with another member of the D.A.

When she was first asked about the possibility of Luna hooking up with Neville Longbottom several years ago, Rowling’s response was “Definitely not.” But as time passed and she watched her characters mature, Rowling started to “feel a bit of a pull” between the unlikely pair.

Ultimately, Rowling left the question of their relationship open at the end of the book because doing otherwise “felt too neat.”

Mr. and Mrs. Longbottom: “The damage is done.”

There is no chance, however, that Neville’s parents, who were tortured into madness by Bellatrix Lestrange, ever left St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies.

“I know people really wanted some hope for that, and I can quite see why because, in a way, what happens to Neville’s parents is even worse than what happened to Harry’s parents,” Rowling said. “The damage that is done, in some cases with very dark magic, is done permanently.”

Rowling said Neville finds happiness in his grandmother’s acceptance of him as a gifted wizard and as the new herbology professor at Hogwarts.

"Too neat..." Luna's never neat. On the other hand, her career sounds like the most entertaining thing ever.

All in favour of pretending post-DH!Neville/Luna is canon? :D

(P.S., falala, edited the title to be more descriptive.)

Cookie from a possible forthcoming work:

As Deputy Headmaster, Neville was too busy with the newly arrived Firsties to join the rest of the Hogwarts faculty in the Great Hall in preparation for the students' arrival. Therefore, when he led the new students into the hall, and saw her on the dais, chatting with her old Head of House Flitwick, he stopped short and was almost run down by young Scorpius Malfoy.

Not that Neville hadn't seen or heard from Luna in the 19 years since the defeat of Voldemort, but those contacts had always been brief. Letters from the depths of Papua New Guinea or the pampas of Argentina (often enclosing a cutting of some plant she thought he might find interesting), talking about the latest extraordinary creature she was pursuing. Several dinner parties given by Harry and Ginny or Ron and Hermione when Luna's presence in England happened to coincide with a Hogwarts term break.

With the arrival of the new crop of firsties, the Sorting began. Only once Rose Weasley was Sorted (Gryffindor, where else?) was Neville able to join the rest of the faculty at the High Table...and the only seat unoccupied was next to Luna.

Oh, this is just the beginning, isn't it? I was so sad about the end before, but now...

Yeah, I agree; it would be nice to know either way, but this is far more than I ever hoped for, so I am happy <3
I think the other way it would feel "too neat" is that she would effectively be pairing off the entire DA. R/Hr, H/G, and N/L. Of course, the first two we all knew would happen since Day 1, so I think she didn't want to wrap it up quite that "neatly."
Icon Love.
Thanks!

Darn, just as I started on my plotbunny about Luna as Mr Ollivander's apprentice, learning to make wands. :(

Oh well. She's travelling the world and NEVILLE GOES WITH HER to look for plants and get the qualifications needed to be Herbology professor. Obviously he can't start as professor immediately - he doesn't even have any NEWTs.

I'm glad JKR left it open. Blessed freedom to do anything and everything.
Oh, go AU, that sounds brilliant (I also find myself wanting to 'ship Ollivander/Luna right now, but I'm resisting, godammit.)

And yes, Herbology is a practical subject, so he definitely needs experience. Experience involving tents and butterfly nets and lots of interesting places to pick up new obscure names for the family of toads and any potential future children.

Hee.
The part about her not answering "the question of their relationship" in the book because it "felt too neat" is practically an admission that they did get together. One of the most common criticisms of Neville/Luna that I've seen is that it pairs the entire sextet off with one another (a moot point for me, as N/L is the only sextet pairing I truly care about), which is too pat or contrived. Or, in other words, too neat.

If she couldn't write it in because it would be too neat, that means the answer to the question is that yes, they ended up together. \o/
The fact that she simply says that she's left it open is just like being handed the ship, gift-wrapped and everything. It's like she's saying, "You know what? Go on, go play, I'm not putting any restrictions on it."

Or, at least, that's how it came out in my head.

THANK YOU JO!!
I was planning to go with "If they're not dead or explicitly with someone else, I'm going to pretend they're together" anyway. JKR's statement there is an unexpected bonus. ANd it's so awesome. :p

(So... AYE!)
Aw man. I totally have a couple pages of Neville's parents becoming better. Meh.
But still. N/L! YES!
